Today we honor our U.S. veterans who served in the armed forces. Both of my grandpas were veterans, as were most men (and many women) who were of age during WWII, Korea, or Viet Nam. My grandpas served during the Korean Conflict – one in South East Asia and the other stateside. I never met either of my grandpas. Both of them died younger than they should have, in part because of the effects of their military service. Serving in the military was never considered a hardship because they were proud to serve their country and the military gave them benefits that they would otherwise not have had – like the G. I. Bill for education. Even my dad’s education was paid for through grandpa’s disabled veterans benefits. Now mom and dad have friends who are veterans or are in the reserves. We are very thankful for all the men and women of the armed forces who serve our country and help keep us (and other people) safe. And we acknowledge all the military dogs and even cats who help keep our service members safe and comforted. Maybe, just maybe, one day people can learn to live peacefully and we won’t need so many armed forces.
And maybe one day the U.S. government will add military dogs and cats to their posters. 🙂
If you’re looking for a charity that does great work with animals and service members, check out The Puppy Rescue Mission. They usually have a few dogs and sometimes even a cat that they’re trying to bring to the U.S. Their primary goal is “…to fund-raise and assist in pet rescue, foster and re-homing when needed, in particular pets of soldiers, especially those deployed in war zones.“
How sweet that you linked to my post – thank you! And I agree about humans learning to live in peace. We will always need our forces, of course, but I would love to see the day when they are deployed for humanitarian purposes only.
What a nice post. I am sorry you didn’t get to meet your grandfathers, I am sure they would have loved you.
Wow, that’s so neat that you have so many veterans in your family! We salute them for all of their service. We agree – it would be nice to not have a need for our armed forces for things like war. Only peaceful things 🙂
Happy Veterans Day! We thank all our veterans…past, present and future. 🙂
Many thanks to each and every veteran. God bless them all.
That was a great post. We will always remember and love our Veterans.
