Time to replace my scratcher lounge

Last night Mom heard barfy noises and this morning she found a hairball in the one place that’s impossible to clean – on one of my giant cardboard scratchers.

I hacked up a hairball once before on this scratcher, so mom took a utility knife and cut away the offending cardboard and turned the scratcher over. Now that I’ve soiled the other side, there’s no more flipping & hiding and it’s time for a replacement. Luckily, she’s been storing a second scratcher in the closet.

The PetFusion Ultimate Cat Scratcher Lounge is a bit pricey ($50 at Amazon), but it lasts a long time because I treat this like furniture and don’t scratch it much. I mostly use it for lounging and as a step to the window sill. I’ve had this one for over 5 years and it’s still in very good condition so Mom doesn’t mind the cost.

The PetFusion Ultimate Cat Scratcher Lounge is well made and looks nice in the living room. The cardboard is dense and the ones I purchased years ago are cut & smoothed very well. The slick, colored edging has held up beautifully. I’ve sent these as gifts to two family members and they’ve also been happy with them. A larger cat can’t fit in the openings at the end, but kittens certainly could. I’m ordering another next week so I’ll see if they’re still the same quality as the ones I purchased years ago.

That was smart and sweet of your Mom to plan ahead.

  2. Maybe your mom could clean it off and turn it upside down. We love our scratch lounger and Wally has tried his best to fit through those openings.

That’s already been done once so the other side has a big divot where mom cut out the first barfy episode. It doesn’t look good and she doesn’t want me twisting a paw on an uneven surface.

  3. Scratchers come, and scratchers go . . .

  4. Brian says:

That sure looks like a nice one, no wonder you like it!

  5. Nice of your mum to get you a new scratcher.
    It looks comfy 🙂

I’ve only heard good things about these. How handy that your mom had a replacement ready! It’s nice that you don’t scratch them much so they last so long.

    • Raven says:

If any of us really tore into them and it didn’t last like a piece of furniture, I don’t think we’d get them. Luckily, none of us have ever been destructive scratchers, I still use the 6-foot perch that is 15 years old and barely has a scratch on the carpeting. The sad thing is that you can’t buy perches of that quality anymore. It’s super sturdy and the round bed at the top is 5.5 inches deep. The new perches tend to be 3 to 3.5 inches deep and not very good for hiding out and feeling cozy.

Whoa! $50 for a cardboard scratcher but if it lasts 5 years. I don’t scratch on cardboard so TW has given the ones she bought away like everything else she doesn’t think I use. The story of my life. The actually have an upright PetFusion sisal scratcher that’s a piece of (censored). In fact they had to send us another one cos the first one was made so badly. This one isn’t much better. The sisal just peels off.

    • Raven says:

Oh, that’s too bad about your scratcher. None of my cats have ever liked the texture of sisal, and neither do I. It can be awfully pokey and irritating.

  8. Backups are always a good idea! Mom was wondering how sturdy they were. Thanks for letting us know, we might invest since I work my way through the less hardy ones pretty quickly. Enjoy!

  9. Grace says:

My kitties had one of these – they wouldn’t go near it. I have weird kitties.

  10. Summer says:

Lucky you, that your human had one ready for you! We have one – just one – and it is well worn. I can guarantee there is no extra waiting in any of our closets (’cause I’ve looked).

  11. BZ Dogs says:

You can see her thinking, “Uh oh… maybe that wasn’t such a good idea.” 🙂

  12. Gattina says:

At least you are kind enough to barf on your scratcher, my cats are not so nice they always choose the oriental rugs instead of the tiles !!

  13. Deziz World says:

MeOW Dat is purricy. But it sure looks nice and big. We have lots of cheaper scratchers, and we use them, but they are much smaller and don’t really suit da needs of us larger kitties. But at least we have somethin’ to scratch, right? Right. 🙂 Big hugs

    Luv ya’

  14. Your mom is wonderful ! How nice that she planned to get another new scratcher ! Enjoy it, but try to barf in another place, OK ? Purrs

  15. i just might have to get one! Love the sleek look

  16. Wow, $50! The store near us sells them for $100! No joke! I have wanted to buy one for a long time, but Cody at http://www.catchatwithcarenandcody.com/ gave me a couple of new scratchers, and Angel and Chuck love them so much, I don’t need anything now. Raven, why don’t you yak on the carpet, like all the other cats that we know…lol!

    • Raven says:

Amazon and Chewy both have them for $50 or less.
I produce hairballs wherever the spirit moves me: wood floor, carpet, wool area rug, human’s bed, my perches, dad’s shoe (just once). Someimes mom gets some warning wretching noises and can move me to an easily cleanable spot. But sometimes I just speed puke it up, or do it during the middle of the night….wherever I happen to be.

  17. I have one too and it’s worn out on both sides. Haven’t had it for long and it is pricey but I know Mum is thinking of getting me a new one soon because I just love it!

  18. Kitty Cat Chronicles says:

Wow, that is one cool scratcher! You are one lucky kitty!

  19. That is very smart of your mom to have a 2nd one handy! I think Mom deserves a treat for that!

  20. Jan K says:

That was good thinking on Mom’s part, to have a spare! It’s nice to find quality products that last a long time. The scratcher/bed we have for Sam came with several layers of cardboard, so they can just be pulled out and discarded when they get hair-balled or just worn. So far I think we still have a couple layers left to go!
