Farewell Red, Hello Orange

Today we said farewell to Red Betta, who went to the big fish bowl in the sky. He was an older fish and has been slowing down for a few weeks. He seemed ok last night, but wasn’t moving this morning.  At least he went quickly and didn’t linger or struggle.

This afternoon we welcomed Orange Betta.

Orange appreciated being released from his prison (the cup-sized container they keep them in at the fish store) and immediately explored his new tank.  It has a rock, several plants, and a moss ball. Sometimes fish don’t take to a new food, but he ate his first meal without hesitation. He’s very active and we think he’ll like his new home.

An update about Grandma (Dad’s mom). She’s making good progress with her broken ankle. Tomorrow she should have the huge cast replaced with a smaller one and she moves from the skilled nursing facility to an assisted living community. She’ll still have 24-hour care, but will be more independent and focused on rehabilitation. It’s less than one mile from our house so we will have much more time for blog visits.

  1. Happy to hear Grandma is recovering nicely. You have had your hands/paws full with taking care of her. That red fish was so poretty. It’s unfortunate that fish don’t live that long – at least none of ours ever did.

    1. Ours have lived anywhere between 1-3 years. The plainer ones tend to live the longest. I suspect the fancier ones are bred for looks, not longevity.

  2. We used to have fish many years ago, but never had very good luck and finally gave up! It looks like orange is liking his new home.
We’re glad that Grandma’s recovery is coming along well. That’s so great that she’s so close for visits, that has to make your life easier.

    1. I don’t name the fish but our system is pretty basic: Black, White, Green, Blue, Orange, and Monster (he’s dark red but attacks his food like a wild beast). I’ll ask Mom if I can name the next one. She thinks White isn’t too long for this world.

  3. Catching up – glad to hear Grandma is doing better after her broken bone. That’s nice that she’s so close to your house and getting the care she needs. Welcome to Orange! He’s got to be loving that new home after being in a cup! Love the moss ball. 🙂 (Re: the broken plate in the last post… reminds me of how I broke a ceramic bowl that I’d hand-painted with Snoopy’s on for our angel beagle Bailey. I was SO bummed when it slipped out of my hand! I swore I’d never use ceramic stuff again…. and yet, now Rita has new ceramic bowls. They were so cute I couldn’t resist them – and at least it won’t be as heart breaking if I break one since they weren’t handmade!) 🙂

  4. Welcome orange 🙂 Glad that Grandma is progressing so well and is going to be closer to home!
