My insides are not feeling well

Mom thinks looking at X-rays is fun. Here’s an x-ray of me from yesterday. I’ve been fairly sick the last 3 days and I’ve been to the vet twice for exams, medicine, and tests.Raven2018-03-07L1.jpg

All the dark areas are air. You can see my lungs and windpipe on the left side. On the right side you can see the gas in my bowel and something that will be deposited in the litterbox pretty soon.

I’ve had serious tummy upset the past few days. Vomiting every 20 minutes is exhausting! The vet gave me some anti-nausea medication, but I may have had a weird reaction (my face swelled up), so Mom didn’t think it was safe to give me the pill form of that drug that the vet sent home with us. So, we took another trip to the vet where he did x-rays, stole more of my blood, gave me some fluids, and gave me a different anti-nausea medication.

My blood test came back with good results and my thyroid hormone levels are lower. We suspect I’m very sensitive to the thyroid medication and I’m having lots of side-effects. It looks like I may be one of the few kitties who don’t tolerate this drug very well. I’ve stopped taking it for now and we may try a much lower dose of the pill form after my tummy settles down. The cream Mom was putting on my ears was making my ears inflamed and I kept shaking my head really hard because my ears were bothering me.

Since most kitties do very well on this medication, the other hyperthyroid treatment options are used less often. We’re looking into both radio-iodine treatment and a special diet (Hills y/d) but neither is a slam-dunk easy or perfect choice.

The vet didn’t like the look of my intestines and suspects I also have some intestinal health issues. So we may have multiple issues to try to juggle to try keep me as healthy as possible.

Anyway, all is going good right now. I haven’t vomited in almost 12 hours, I’ve eaten 1/2 can of food, Mom is home with me, and I’m napping by the open window.

Hello Dear Raven! Mom once had a lovely dark gray cat named Harmony! Harmony had classic symptoms of Hyperthyroidism. Her symptoms were excessive Night Yowling; eating voraciously both Wet and Dry foods and drinking lots of water but losing weight. Mom had subscribed to qty of RWO Veterinary newsletters on CATS. These are a) CATNIP and b) CATWATCH. And Mom went to a Veterinarian who did what Mom asked, doing bloodwork for Hyperthyroidism. And Mom was correct! Harmony had Hyperthyroidism. There was a local Formulating Pharmacy. They placed the Medication into an ointment that a specific amount, Mom put on her clean &dried hands a specific amt onto her index finger and rubbed it on the inside of Harmony ear! So Raven, is there a Formulation Pharmacist near to you?

Phew, we were glad to hear that update at the end, because that was all sounding pretty worrisome! It sounds like there is still a lot to deal with and figure out, but we are just glad you are feeling better for now, Raven. We’ll be thinking of you!!

  4. The Island Cats says:

We’re sorry to hear you are having tummy problems, Raven. We hope the nausea medication you got helps so you won’t vomit anymore. And that you can find a better solution for your hyperthyroid medication. Y’know, both Ernie and Zoey had gastro issues, so if you need any advice, let the mom know. Sending you lots of purrs…

    • Raven says:

Gastro issues are frustrating. We’ve had Raven’s digestive system under good control for a while – she likes the food she’s eating and it likes her! We think it’s the thyroid medication that is causing the recent vomiting problems.

  5. Cathy Keisha says:

Whoa! sounds like you need these healing purrz. I think Flynn couldn’t take that medicine either. It upset his tummy too.

  6. BZ Dogs says:

Poor sweetie! The golden boys are thinking their very best thoughts for you to be back to your best-est you soon.

  7. oh you poor baby, we pray that they will find out exactly what is making you not feel well and that you will be better soon. Sending purrs and prayers! xoxo

    • Raven says:

The vet is pretty sure it’s a combination of things: my thyroid hormone levels being off, the thyroid medication making me barfy, and some general bowel inflammation that’s making my system very sensitive. Trying to keep them all in balance is proving to be a bit difficult.

  8. We can only hope your difficulties will clear up soon. Diagnosing animals is a difficult art.

  9. We’re sorry to hear about your tummy issues, Raven. We cross our paws and hope you feel better soon. Purrs

  10. Summer says:
