Mom & Dad decided to take me on a trip to Southern California to get radioiodine treatment for my hyperthyroidism. It will be a 7-8 hour drive so they got me a medium sized crate that will fit in the back of the car. My favorite covered bed can fit inside and I’ll still have room to stand and stretch. I have both a soft and a hard-shell cat carrier, but they didn’t think I’d be comfortable in either of those for the long day of driving both there and back. They put my food next to the new crate so I learn that it’s not scary. Over the next few days they’ll put my food closer and hopefully I’ll just go in and explore on my own. (Keep hoping, Mom!)
There are two facilities within 2 hours of us that do a similar treatment, but Mom thought this place would be the best. It’s owned by one vet who is responsible for my treatment, they do thorough testing, it’s just one stay of 5 days (maybe 6), and they have pretty good “isolation” housing where I’ll stay while my body gets rid of most of the radioactive iodine. Each cage has a web cam so Mom & Dad can see how bored I am during my stay (Don’t you mean imprisonment?!)
We’re a little rushed making plans for this trip. Mom thought I would go three weeks from now, but they had an opening next week. Mom thinks it’s important that I be treated sooner than later so I don’t get sick again before treatment.
I’ll share more information about my road trip and treatment. This is a big “adventure” for a kitty who doesn’t like to leave her quiet house. This treatment has very little risk and is successful in treating hyperthyroidism 95% of the time. Mom is cautiously optimistic that this will work for me. She’s just a bit nervous about coordinating everything so quickly and how I’ll do in vet jail for 5 days.
Mom can’t get this tune out of her head, and if she were tech-savvy with her cell phone, she’d make it her ring tone.
Purrs will be greatly appreciated over the next couple weeks.

I’ve stepped inside and it isn’t too bad. But once I’m trapped inside, I sure it will be much less comfortable!
I remember reading about this treatment when Sam was first diagnosed and we were having trouble getting the pills into her. But that settled down for her so we never pursued it. I didn’t remember what a high success rate it had…that is so promising.
It sounds like your Mom found the best place for you, Raven, and we will be thinking of you and hoping all goes well!
Raven would not be thrilled to get pills once or twice a day, but we could probably manage. The medicine made her really sick. I suspect we started with too high a dose, but she already has some digestive issues and it wouldn’t be a good long-term solution for her.
We will be sending tons of purrs and prayers your way too. I’m sure it will work for you. We considered it for Sister Precious but she seriously gets deathly sick being confined so we had to opt just for the meds. Hugs from all of us.
I’m glad the pills are working for Sister Precious. The radioiodine treatment wouldn’t be an option for someone like her who hates being confined.
